Netflix Inks Production Deal With German-Based American Creator Anna Winger

Following the launch of original series “Unorthodox” in March 2020, Netflix Sept. 13 announced multiyear partnership with series creator Anna Winger and her Berlin-based production company Airlift Productions. U.S.-native Winger will develop and produce international drama series for the SVOD leader.

The first project will be “Transatlantic,” a drama series set during the 1940 refugee crisis in Marseilles, France. It is inspired by the true adventures of the Emergency Rescue Committee and Julie Orringer’s 2019 novel, The Flight Portfolio. The series is created by Winger and Daniel Hendler and is currently in pre-production. Winger is also working on a contemporary original series set in the English countryside.

Based in Berlin, Airlift works with writers from all around the world on projects set in Europe, Africa and the U.K. Winger is also working with Netflix’s Grow Creative initiative to help foster the next generation of talent in Europe.

“Berlin is a crossroads for international artists,” Winger said in a statement. “As an American living and working here, far from Hollywood, my work is deeply rooted in local conversations.”

Winger said she founded Airlift as an “umbrella” for collaborations with writers from all around the world on projects set in Europe, Africa and the U.K. She is also working with Netflix’s Grow Creative initiative to help foster the next generation of talent in Europe.

“This partnership is an opportunity to build on our “Unorthodox” experience, bringing ambitious projects to life,” Winger said.

The series, about a Hasidic Jewish woman in Brooklyn who flees to Berlin from an arranged marriage and is taken in by a group of musicians — until her past comes calling — was nominated eight Emmys and won for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series (Maria Schrader).

“Having witnessed her magic whilst collaborating on ‘Unorthodox,’ we’re already aware of her unique talent for turning stories into thrilling global hits,” said Rachel Eggebeen, director of original series for EMEA at Netflix. “The combination of Anna’s creative vision and our ambitions for our growing European drama offerings align perfectly. We’re looking forward … to bring their series to our members in Germany and around the world.”
