Paramount Animation’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, the third movie installment in the popular cartoon franchise that saw its theatrical debut scuttled due to the coronavirus pandemic, is reportedly set to stream on Netflix outside the United States.
Paramount earlier this year said that after two theatrical delays, Sponge on the Run would skip the box office, with the studio opting instead to offer the $60 million budgeted movie on premium VOD in 2021, followed by streaming on CBS All Access.
Netflix can stream the movie internationally at any time, with the exception of China where it does not have independent service, according to Variety, which cited sources familiar with the deal. Financial details of the license agreement, which includes Canada, were not disclosed.
For Netflix, Sponge on the Run represents a feature film from a franchise with a proven track record and international appeal. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie generated $54.7 million at the international box office in 2004. The 2015 sequel, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, generated $162.1 million, or about 50% the movie’s global ticket sales outside the U.S.
