‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ Tops September Disc Sales Chart; ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Still No. 1 for 2022

Universal Pictures’ Minions: The Rise of Gru was No. 1 on the top 10 list of physical-media sales for September 2022, according to the NPD Group’s VideoScan tracking service that compiles DVD and Blu-ray transactions. The “Despicable Me” prequel was released on disc Sept. 6.

The August top seller, Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World Dominion, slid to No. 2 in September.

The month’s No. 3 seller was Warner’s Elvis, director Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic that was released on disc Sept. 13 and spent two weeks atop the weekly sales charts.

No. 4 was Paramount’s 1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story, the DVD and Blu-ray release of the Paramount+ limited series.

September’s No. 5 seller was Disney-owned Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder, a late-in-the-month Sept. 27 disc release. As it has already topped weekly sales twice, it should be a high performer in October as well.

New September disc releases also grabbed the No. 6 and No. 7 spots, taken by Sony Pictures’ Where the Crawdads Sing and Disney’s Lightyear, respectively. Both were released Sept. 13.

The year-to-date top 10 carried over nine of the same 10 titles from the previous month, led again by Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The biggest shift saw Jurassic World Dominion rise five spots to take over No. 2 on the year-to-date list.

Paramount’s 1986 original Top Gun returned to the No. 10 spot on the list of top sellers for 2022, having slipped out of the top 10 after August.
