Mike’s Picks: ‘The Curse of the Cat People’ and ‘2 Weeks in Another Town’

The Curse of the Cat People

Shout! Factory, Horror, $22.99 Blu-ray, NR.
Stars Simone Simon, Ann Carter, Kent Smith, Jane Randoph.
1944. Even viewers without the slightest idea of who producer Val Lewton was have stumbled into The Curse of the Cat People while channel surfing and found this haunter about a lonely young girl and her unusual made-up friend (even as these things go) to be surprisingly schlock-less, thoughtful, and in its own hallucinatory way, psychologically credible.
Extras: With two commentaries (including a new one), a half-hour Simone Simon portrait and an Ann Carter radio interview … well, let’s just say that every cult movie deserves this kind of TLC.

2 Weeks in Another Town

Available via Warner Archive
Warner, Drama, $21.99 Blu-ray, NR.
Stars Kirk Douglas, Edward G. Robinson, Cyd Charisse, George Hamilton.
1962. Adapted from a novel by Irwin Shaw, whose before-and-after work fared better on screens both big and small, 2 Weeks in Another Town is somewhat more fascinating than it seemed at the time, though only in a few instances for the right reasons.
