Merchandising: ‘Moonfall’ Lands at Retail

The new sci-fi thriller Moonfall arrived on Blu-ray Disc and DVD April 26 from Lionsgate, and each of the big three retailers had an exclusive edition of it.

The latest film from director Roland Emmerich focuses on a pair of former astronauts and a conspiracy theorist who somehow become humanity’s last hope for stopping the moon from plunging into the Earth.

Best Buy, as usual, trotted out Steelbook packaging for the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc version of the film, at $34.99.

Target’s ‘Moonfall’ Blu-ray with lenticular slipcover

Target had a version of the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with special lenticular artwork on the slipcover.

Walmart didn’t have a special collectible per se, but did offer a $19.99 two-pack of the Moonfall Blu-ray with a Blu-ray the 2009 Nicolas Cage-starrer Knowing, a much better film about a potential apocalypse. Knowing was probably chosen for the two-pack to take advantage of the proximity to the theatrical release of the self-referential Cage film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which opened April 22 and also is distributed by Lionsgate.

Among other deals for the week, Target held a sale of Marvel movies, with a number of Blu-ray Discs of movies featuring Avengers characters for around $15 each.
