‘Mandalorian’ Returns to Top Spot on Parrot’s TV Demand Charts

The Disney+ “Star Wars” spinoff “The Mandalorian” returned to the No. 1 spot on not only Parrot Analytics’ digital originals rankings the week ended Jan. 4, but also the data firm’s overall list of TV series from any platform, including broadcast and cable.

A “digital original” is a multi-episode series in which the most recent season was first made available on a streaming platform such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu or Disney+.

For the week, “The Mandalorian” registered 142.2 million average daily Demand Expressions, the proprietary metric used by Parrot Analytics to measure global demand for TV content. That was up 22.9% in expressions compared with the previous week, when it was No. 2.

The first-season finale of “The Mandalorian” became available Dec. 27, and creator Jon Favreau announced season two was coming this fall. The show might have also received a bit of a boost thanks to overall “Star Wars” chatter fueled by the theatrical release of The Rise of Skywalker, the ninth chapter of the “Star Wars” saga.

“The Mandalorian” had been the top digital original for five consecutive weeks before Netflix’s “The Witcher” took over the top spot a week ago. “The Witcher” dropped to No. 2 on both charts. “The Witcher” pulled 132.3 million expressions, up 4.3% from the previous week.

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” dropped to No. 4 on the digital originals chart, registering 79 million expressions, up 5.4% from the previous week.

DC Universe’s “Titans” slipped a spot to No. 5 on the digital originals chart, with expressions down 3.1% to 53 million.

Hulu’s “Letterkenny” made a big move on the originals chart to No. 9, from No. 16 the previous week, following the Dec. 25 premiere of the eighth season. Expressions rose 31.2% to 30.9 million.

The Demand Expressions metric draws from a wide variety of data sources, including video streaming, social media activity, photo sharing, blogging, commenting on fan and critic rating platforms, and downloading and streaming via peer-to-peer protocols and file sharing sites.

Of the 10 most demanded series in all of television by U.S. audiences for the week, four are digital originals: “The Mandalorian,” “The Witcher,” “You” and “Stranger Things.” Parrot expects the trend of digital originals appearing more frequently on the overall TV chart to continue into 2020, after digital originals making rare appearances on the overall chart for much of the past two years.

Media Play News has teamed with Parrot Analytics to provide readers with a weekly top 10 of the most popular digital original TV series in the United States, based on the firm’s  proprietary metric called Demand Expressions, which measures global demand for TV content through a wide variety of data sources, including video streaming, social media activity, photo sharing, blogging, commenting on fan and critic rating platforms, and downloading and streaming via peer-to-peer protocols and file sharing sites.
