Disney’s Luca debuted at No. 1 on the NPD VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, the week ended Aug. 7.
The latest animated movie from Pixar bypassed theaters during the pandemic and was released directly to the Disney+ streaming service in June. The film tells the story of a young sea monster who assumes human form to explore a seaside Italian town.
The previous week’s top seller, Paramount’s suspenseful sequel A Quiet Place Part II, slipped to No. 2 on both charts in its second week. The Blu-ray collection of both “Quiet Place” movies dropped to No. 11 on the overall chart and No. 5 on the Blu-ray chart.
Likewise, Warner’s Mortal Kombat remake slid another spot to No. 3 on both chart in its fourth week on shelves.
The No. 4 overall disc seller was Warner’s 1996 sports comedy Space Jam, continuing to get a boost from the release of follow up Space Jam: A New Legacy. It was the No. 18 Blu-ray.
Another newcomer, Warner’s Those Who Wish Me Dead, debuted at No. 5 on the overall disc chart, and No. 6 on the Blu-ray chart. The action thriller stars Angelina Jolie as a firefighter protecting a boy from assassins. It earned just over $7 million at the domestic box office.
A third newcomer in the top 10 was 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie, thanks to a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from Shout! Factory. A special Steelbook 4K combo pack was released to mark the 35th anniversary of the animated movie based on the Hasbro toy line of robots that transform into vehicles and weapons. It was the No. 4 Blu-ray seller (No. 9 on the overall chart), with 99.8% of its total unit sales being of the 4K version.
Blu-ray formats accounted for 67% of first-week Luca unit sales, with the 4K version accounting for 10% of its total sales (meaning 57% was the regular Blu-ray edition). Those Who Wish Me Dead had 44% of its first-week sales from its Blu-ray version.
The Media Play News rental chart the week ended Aug. 8 saw A Quiet Place Part II taking No. 1 for a second week, with Those Who Wish Me Dead debuting at No. 2.
Warner’s Wrath of Man dropped a spot to No. 3, following by Lionsgate’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw at No. 4, and Lionsgate’s Midnight in the Switchgrass at No. 5.
