Lionsgate Bows Branded ‘Sound’ Podcast Business Unit

Lionsgate has officially entered the podcast business with a branded “Lionsgate Sound” operating segment responsible for producing podcasts for in-house and third-party distribution.

The unit is reportedly headed by Craig Piligian via Lionsgate’s Pilgrim Media Group, with the day-to-day operations overseen by Gretchen Stockdale and Nicholas Caprio.

Initial podcasts include a show about former Mexican drug lord “El Chapo,” hosted and produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson; a Q&A format show “Playing Dead,” FBI-themed “A Nation for Thieves,” and “Died and Survived,” outlining near-death experiences. A true-crime thriller, “The Lives and Deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman,” is reportedly also in the works.

“We look forward to entering the rapidly expanding podcast market as a great source of exciting new properties as well as an opportunity to feed the growing demand for audio content with our films, television series, Starz original programming, and library titles,” Joe Drake, chair of the Motion Picture Group, and Kevin Beggs, chair of the Lionsgate Television Group, said in a joint statement. “This initiative demonstrates Lionsgate’s 360-degree approach to content, creating an opportunity for us to continue onscreen stories and make companion podcasts to serve fans of our IP while scaling the audience base for new projects.”

Lionsgate reports first-quarter fiscal year 2023 results after the market close on Aug. 4.
