‘Knock at the Cabin’ Looks to Scare ‘Avatar 2’ Off Box Office Perch
February 3, 2023
After seven weekends and $2.13 billion in ticket sales, 20th Century Studios’ mega box office hit Avatar: The Way of Water is set to not repeat as the top-grossing weekend theatrical release.
A trio of new releases aim to upend the status quo, led by director M. Night Shyamalan’s latest psychological thriller, Knock at the Cabin from Universal Pictures; Paramount Pictures’ 80 for Brady, about four female octogenarians heading to the Super Bowl to see their hero Tom Brady; and Fathom Events/Angel Studios’ The Chosen: Season 3 Finale, the faith-based series that has resonated with Christian moviegoers in previous screenings.
Marketing for Knock at the Cabin included Shyamalan’s appearance at January’s CES in Las Vegas touting the film’s AI features. The movie, which is set to open across more than 3,800 North American screens, is projected to generate upwards of $25 million in revenue. It generated $1.45 million in special Thursday sneak screenings.
That’s the same number of screens (not ticket sales) debuting 80 for Brady, whose cast includes Jane Fonda, Sally Fields, Rita Moreno and Lily Tomlin. The movie could generate more than $19 million in revenue.

Weekend holdovers include Avatar: The Way of Water, which is expected to add another $11 million in ticket sales, along with Universal’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish ($9.4 million), Sony Pictures’ A Man Called Otto ($4.7 million) and M3GAN with $3.5 million. Both Boots and M3GAN are also available in the home on PVOD.
