With the digital availability of Paramount Pictures’ Top Gun: Maverick, coupled with the debut of HBO Max’s “Game of Thrones” prequel, “House of the Dragon,” it was little surprise which movie and TV show dominated household streaming through Aug. 28.
Maverick topped Universal Pictures’ sci-fi thriller Nope and perennial chart topper, A24’s Everything, Everywhere All at Once to top all movies, while “House of Dragon” bested AMC+ original series “Better Call Saul,” and Hulu/FX docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham,” the latter chronicling the purchase and stewardship of Wrexham AFC, one of English soccer’s oldest clubs, by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia“).
Notably, Maverick resonated with streamers while remaining strong at the box office ($4.7 million across North American screens). With more than $691 million in domestic ticket sales, Maverick is encroaching upon Disney/Marvel Studios’ Black Panther as the No. 5 all-time grossing North American release.
