July 5 New Releases on Blu-ray and DVD include ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’

Among the July 5 new releases on DVD and Blu-ray are Everything Everywhere All at Once and Downton Abbey: A New Era.

The multi-universe action-adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once arrives on Blu-ray Disc, DVD and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray July 5 from A24 and Lionsgate. Directed and written by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the writing-directing duo collectively known as the Daniels (Swiss Army Man), the film stars Michelle Yeoh as an unlikely hero who must channel newfound powers to fight fearsome dangers from the multiverse. Evelyn Wang (Yeoh), a flustered immigrant mother, is contacted from a parallel universe and told that only she can save the world. The unlikely hero must learn to channel her newfound powers and fight through the splintering timelines of the multiverse to save her home, her family and herself. The film also stars Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., James Hong and Jamie Lee Curtis. The film has attained something of a cult status among genre fans and has earned $67 million at the domestic box office.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment releases Downton Abbey: A New Era on Blu-ray Disc, DVD and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray July 5. The second film based on the popular PBS period drama, and a sequel to the 2019 “Downton Abbey” movie, A New Era follows the Crawleys and their staff as they welcome a movie crew and their glamorous stars to Downton for the filming of a new silent movie, while other members of the family go on a grand adventure to a villa in the south of France to uncover a mystery about the Dowager Countess and her past. Written by series creator Julian Fellowes and directed by Simon Curtis, Downton Abbey: A New Era earned $43.8 million at the domestic box office.

Screen Media releases the supernatural thriller Monstrous on Blu-ray Disc and DVD July 5. The film stars Christina Ricci as a mother who along with with her 7-year-old son Cody flees her abusive ex-husband. Still traumatized, they try to settle into a new life in an idyllic and remote lakeside farmhouse. However, their physical and mental well-being are pushed to the limit as their fragile existence is threatened. The cast also includes Colleen Camp, Santino Bernard, Don Balderamos and Nick Vallelonga.

Another horror film due from Screen Media July 5 on DVD is 11th Hour Cleaning. The story follows a team of crime scene cleaners who experience ghastly hallucinations and must confront their most personal regrets and fears when they are trapped at a recent murder site by an ancient Nordic demon hell-bent on driving them insane. As they uncover what truly happened to the murder victims, they must escape their own deaths by finding and destroying the Norse relics that give the demon its powers. Directed by Ty Leisher, the film features Chloe Brooks (Embed), Eddie Finlay (2 Fast 2 Furious), Anita Leeman-Torres (Final Kill), Ed Morrone (Final Kill) and Dave Baez (“Dexter”).

Eleven Arts and Shout! Factory July 5 release the CG anime movie adventure Ryoma! The Prince of Tennis through digital retailers and as a Blu-ray Disc + DVD combo pack. Directed by Hiroshi Koujina, the film is based on the blockbuster Japanese sports manga series and its sequels created by renowned manga author Takeshi Konomi, with 60 million copies sold over 22 years. Ryoma! is the first CG anime movie from this popular franchise. Featuring an all-new storyline with music and lyrics by Konomi, the film becomes available for home viewers after a nationwide theatrical release. The Blu-ray + DVD combo pack includes the movie with both English audio and the original Japanese audio (with English subtitles). The English dub features a cast of high-profile voice actors, including Ry McKeand (Attack on Titan, SK8 the Infinity) as Ryoma Echizen, David Wald (Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission) as Nanjiro Echizen, Xanthe Huynh (Persona 5, Sailor Moon Eternal) as Sakuno Ryuzaki, Jonah Scott (Beastars, SK8 the Infinity) as Kunimitsu Tezuka, Tiana Camacho (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure) as Emerald, Edward Bosco (Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters) as Wolf, and William Ofoegbu (Next A-Class) as Boo. The disc package also includes the full-length alternative cut of the movie that includes different scenes featuring Hyotei team captain Keigo Atobe and Shitenhoji team captain Kuranosuke Shiraishi. The film finds Ryoma — inspired by his tennis champion father — determined to train in the United States after winning a championship in Japan. He runs into his classmate Sakuno right as she gets into trouble with street gangs, and Ryoma accepts a tennis match against the villains to save her. During the intense tennis battle, the shock of two tennis balls ramming into one another disrupts the flow. Ryoma and Sakuno are suddenly transported back into the past, decades before, when Ryoma’s father challenged his last match at a championship in the U.S.

The 2014 Tom Cruise action thriller Edge of Tomorrow will be released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray combo pack and digital July 5 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Co-starring Emily Blunt and directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith), the film takes place as an alien race, undefeatable by any existing military unit, has launched a relentless attack on Earth, and Major William Cage (Cruise) finds himself dropped into a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage is thrown into a time loop, forced to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again and again. Training alongside Rita Vrataski (Blunt), his skills slowly evolve, and each battle moves them a step closer to defeating the enemy. The film also stars Bill Paxton (Aliens, HBO’s “Big Love”), Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1), Noah Taylor (Lawless), Kick Gurry (Australian TV’s “Tangle”), Dragomir Mrsic (Snabba Cash II), Charlotte Riley (World Without End), Jonas Armstrong (BBC TV’s “Robin Hood”), Franz Drameh (Attack the Block), Masayoshi Haneda (Emperor) and Tony Way (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

Mutiny Pictures’ documentary The Rise of the Synths will be released on digital July 5 from Mill Creek Entertainment. Narrated by director John Carpenter (Halloween, The Fog), The Rise of the Synths explores the roots of the Synthwave scene, charting its humble online and underground beginnings to its impact on today’s pop culture. The film traverses nine countries, interviewing the scene’s biggest stars and original trailblazers tracing its rise to popularity. The film includes artists Carpenter Brut, Gunship, Electric Youth, Power Glove, Waveshaper and Dance with the Dead. The Byron Bay International Film Festival 2020 winner for Best Music Documentary is written and directed by Iván Castell, with the soundtrack composed by OGRE.
