Universal Pictures’ 45th anniversary re-release of director Steven Spielberg’s Jaws managed to hit at just the right time to make an impact on the disc sales charts.
Driven by the film’s debut on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, Jaws grabbed the No. 7 spot on the NPD VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, the week ended June 6. That’s the 1975 film’s highest placement on the chart since it hit No. 4 in the summer of 2012 (another time it was re-released on disc).
The classic blockbuster about a shark that terrorizes an island vacation resort during a busy summer reached No. 6 on the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart. Blu-ray formats accounted for 72% of the film’s unit sales for the week. The 4K Ultra HD edition, which was released June 2, comprised 67% of the film’s total sales.
The top five titles on the overall sales chart were unchanged from the previous week.
Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog was No. 1 on both charts for a third consecutive week. Universal’s The Invisible Man was No. 2 on both charts, followed by Disney’s Onward at No. 3 and Warner’s Birds of Prey at No. 4.
The No. 5 overall title was Disney-owned Fox’s The Call of the Wild, which was No. 7 on the Blu-ray Chart. Warner’s Justice League Dark: Apokolips War was the No. 5 Blu-ray seller for the week.
The top newcomer aside from the new edition of Jaws was Warner Bros.’ release of HBO’s Watchmen limited series, which was No. 22 overall and No. 10 on the Blu-ray chart.
On the Media Play News rental chart for the week ended June 7, Invisible Man took the top spot for a second week, with Call of the Wild repeating at No. 2.
Birds of Prey rose a spot to No. 3, switching places with No. 4 Bloodshot, from Sony Pictures. Sonic climbed a spot to No. 5.
