Jan. 3 New Releases Include ‘Black Adam,’ ‘Star Trek: Prodigy,’ ‘Prey for the Devil’ on Blu-ray

Titles newly available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc the week of Jan. 3 include Black Adam, Prey for the Devil and the first volume of “Star Trek: Prodigy” episodes.

The DC Comics superhero film Black Adam arrives on 4K Ultra HD disc, Blu-ray Disc and DVD Jan. 3 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Based on characters from DC Comics, the film stars Dwayne Johnson (“the “Jumanji” films, “Moana”) as Black Adam, Aldis Hodge (TV’s “City on a Hill,” One Night in Miami film) as Hawkman, Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) as Atom Smasher, Sarah Shahi (TV’s “Sex/Life,” Rush Hour 3) as Adrianna, Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express, The Mummy) as Ishmael, Quintessa Swindell (Voyagers and TV’s “Trinkets”) as Cyclone, Bodhi Sabongui (TV’s “A Million Little Things”) as Amon, and Pierce Brosnan (the “Mamma Mia!” and James Bond franchises) as Dr. Fate.  In the film, nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods — and imprisoned just as quickly — Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world. The horror film Prey for the Devil arrives on DVD, Blu-ray Disc, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and VOD Jan. 3 from Lionsgate. Directed by Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism), the film stars Jacqueline Byers (“Salvation,” “Roadies,” Bad Samaritan), Colin Salmon (Mortal Engines, Alien vs. Predator, Resident Evil), Christian Navarro (“13 Reasons Why,” Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Bushwick), Lisa Palfrey (“Cobra,” “Sex Education,” “Chloe”), Nicholas Ralph (“All Creatures Great and Small,” The Most Reluctant Convert), Ben Cross (Star Trek, First Knight, Chariots of Fire), and Academy Award nominee Virginia Madsen (Best Supporting Actress, Sideways, 2004; Candyman; “Designated Survivor”). In the film, Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers) believes she is answering a calling to be the first female exorcist — but who, or what, called her? In response to a global rise in demonic possessions, Ann seeks out a place at an exorcism school reopened by the Catholic Church. Until she arrives, such schools had only trained priests in the Rite of Exorcism, but a professor (Colin Salmon) recognizes Sister Ann’s gifts and agrees to train her. Thrust onto the spiritual frontline with fellow student Father Dante (Christian Navarro), Sister Ann finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl, who Sister Ann believes is possessed by the same demon that tormented her own mother years ago. Determined to root out the evil, Ann soon realizes that evil has been expecting her. The film earned $19.8 million at U.S. theaters.

Nickelodeon and Paramount Home Entertainment release Star Trek: Prodigy — Season 1 Vol. 1 on Blu-ray and DVD Jan. 3. The set includes the first 10 episodes of the animated series, from “Lost and Found” to “A Moral Star.” “Star Trek: Prodigy” follows a group of young aliens who discover the experimental U.S.S. Protostar and fly the starship into space in search of new adventures, aided by a holographic version of Capt. Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). The release includes bonus materials and collectible art cards.

The crime actioner The System will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc Jan. 3 from Vertical Entertainment and Distribution Solutions. In the film, when a young soldier newly returned from war gets caught up in a drug bust, he is recruited by the authorities to go undercover in a notoriously dangerous prison in order to figure out what is really going on. The film stars Tyrese Gibson, Jeremy Piven, Terrence Howard and Lil Yachty.

Disney will serve up the Searchlight Pictures dark satire The Menu through digital retailers Jan. 3. Directed by Mark Mylod (“Succession”), the outrageous tale of fine dining has earned Golden Globe nods for Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes and for Best Actress for Anya Taylor-Joy. In the film, a young couple (Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. The film also stars Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Reed Birney, Judith Light and John Leguizamo. It arrives on Blu-ray and DVD Jan. 17.

Dark Sky Films will release the sci-fi thriller Landlocked via VOD, digital purchase and in select theaters Jan. 6, 2023. A unique combination of documentary and narrative filmmaking, Landlocked incorporates actual home movies into a horrifying fictitious storyline. Summoned to his soon-to-be demolished childhood home, a man discovers an old VHS camera that can see into the past, driving him to record as many memories as possible before the doomed house is destroyed. The film, the directorial debut of Paul Owens, took 10 years to complete using his own home movies, casting his real-life family to play fictionalized versions of themselves, and filmed in the actual locations where he spent his youth.
