‘Jackass Forever’ at the Weekend Box Office?

With the Beijing Winter Olympics dominating media attention over the next two weeks, and Super Bowl LVI taking place on Feb. 13, the domestic box office has more than its share of competition for the month of February.

As a result, studios remain hesitant to roll out major titles, opting instead for offbeat fare that includes Paramount Pictures’ Jackass Forever, Johnny Knoxville’s newest reboot of his low-budget prank movie franchise launched 20 years ago.

The movie has already tracked $1.5 million in Thursday night screenings and is reportedly projected to sell $26 million worth of tickets across 3,600 North American screens through Feb. 6. The tally would be below the last “Jackass” movie, Bad Grandpa, which generated $32.1 million in its first weekend of release in 2013, and Jackass 3D in 2010, which saw more than $50 million in ticket sales.

But who’s counting? The box office estimate should be more than enough to hold off Lionsgate’s Moonfall, co-starring Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson, which the studio projects could generate $11 million in revenue across 3,400. That should be enough to push Sony Pictures’ enduring theatrical juggernaut, Spider-Man: No Way Home, into the No. 3 spot with $7.2 million in ticket sales. The movie is approaching $750 million in North American ticket sales.
