‘Honest Thief’ Steals Another Sedate Domestic Weekend Box Office

The Open Road Films drama Honest Thief, starring Liam Neeson as a guilt-conscious bank robber who confronts FBI agents wanting to rob him, took top billing at another moribund weekend domestic box office (Oct. 23-25). The film generated an estimated $2.28 million across 2,500 screens nationwide — or $912 per screen. The tally was 44% less than the previous weekend. Thief has generated $7.4 million in 10 days of release, and $10.7 million globally.
With major theater chains only slowly re-opening screens (New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles remain closed), moviegoers still appear reluctant to return without an available coronavirus vaccine and/or major studio releases playing in cineplexes. Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg said the feel-good Thief is aimed at bringing consumer confidence.
“Our belief was that releasing a crowd-pleaser of a film…at this point in time, would generate the positive word-of-mouth necessary to successfully propel the film for many weeks,” Ortenberg said in a media statement. “Back to back weeks at No. 1, confirms that belief.”

Other weekend revenue generators included The War With Grandpa, which tallied $1.9 million, or 25% less than the previous weekend. The Robert De Niro-starrer has generated $9.7 million over 17 days. The horror film The Empty Man from 20th Century Studios debuted with $1.3 million in ticket sales across 2,027 screens. Warner Bros.’ Tenet sold another $1.3 million worth of tickets across 1,801 screens.
