Disney’s Hocus Pocus was No. 1 on the domestic top 10 list of combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales for October 2020 according to the NPD Group’s VideoScan tracking service. It’s the second-straight month the perennial Halloween favorite has topped the monthly disc sales charts, after taking the top spot in September as well.
The 1993 film about three Salem witches transported to modern times frequently finishes in the weekly top five in the weeks leading up to Halloween, but this year received a boost from a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition. While the title didn’t lead any of the weekly charts in September, it moved into the top spot for four of the five weeks before Halloween.
The one week in October that didn’t have Hocus Pocus in the top spot was the week ended Oct. 17, when Warner’s Harry Potter Complete 8-Film Collection was No. 1. The “Harry Potter” set was No. 4 for the month of October.
No. 2 for the month was Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, moving up six spots from the previous month.
Warner’s Beetlejuice, the spooky 1988 comedy from director Tim Burton, dropped a spot from September to take No. 3 in October. Burton also produced Nightmare Before Christmas.
Moving up from No. 14 in September to take No. 5 in October was Warner’s It: Chapter One, the 2017 adaptation of the first half of author Stephen King’s popular horror novel.
The spooky season also propelled Warner’s It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (No. 9) and Disney’s double feature of the first two “Halloweentown” movies (No. 10) into the October top 10.
The month’s top new release was Paramount’s Star Trek: Picard — Season One, the disc release of the CBS All Access sci-fi series, at No. 6.
Universal’s re-release of the “Back to the Future” trilogy, spearheaded by a new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray collection, landed at No. 7
The only other new release making the monthly chart was Funimation’s My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising at No. 8, which was the top-selling Blu-ray the last week of October (and also the first week of November).
The year’s list of top 10 sellers had the same titles as the previous month, but slightly shuffled. The top five remained unchanged, led by Disney’s Frozen II, which has been the year’s best seller since February.
Moving up two spots to No. 6 was Universal’s 1917, while Sony Pictures’ Bad Boys for Life dropped to No. 8, the two titles swapping spots as Lionsgate’s Midway remained at No. 7.
