HBO Max Announces Price Increase

Effective today, Jan. 12, the price of a new HBO Max ad-free monthly subscription in the United States will increase from $14.99 to $15.99 plus applicable taxes, the service announced.

Existing subscribers who are currently paying $14.99 per month will see their monthly rate increase to $15.99 effective their next billing cycle on or after Feb. 11.

“This price increase of $1 will allow us to continue to invest in providing even more culture-defining programming and improving our customer experience for all users,” a press release noted.

This is the first time HBO Max has increased the price of a monthly subscription since launching in May 2020.

Parent company Warner Bros. Discovery had long been hinting at a price increase. Just last week, CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels said subscription streaming service prices were too low.

“I think there’s a lot of upside opportunity there,” Wiedenfels said Jan. 5 at Citi’s 2023 Communications, Media & Entertainment Conference in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The ad-supported tier price of $9.99 per month stays the same.
