The docudrama Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killer will be released via digital retailers and on demand Jan. 22, followed by DVD Feb. 5 from Alliance Entertainment and GVN Releasing.
Character actor Nick Searcy directs the story of the arrest and trial of Kermit Gosnell, who was labeled “America’s most prolific serial killer” by ABC News after being convicted of murder for the deaths of three infants who were born alive after attempted abortions, and involuntary manslaughter of a woman during an abortion procedure.
Dean Cain stars as lead detective James Wood, who uncovers Gosnell’s operation after a routine raid while checking into possible illegal prescription drug sales. Wood and district attorney Alexis McGuire (Sarah Jane Morris) dig deeper into the landmark murder case, resulting in a trial that became a lightning rod for controversy. Earl Billings plays Gosnell.
A crowdfunding campaign raised $2.3 million to make the film, which earned $3.7 million at the domestic box office.
DVD extras include behind-the-scenes featurettes, with interviews of the filmmakers and the real-life investigators.
