‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Stomps to Top Spot on Disc Sales Charts

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s Godzilla vs. Kong easily debuted at No. 1 on the NPD VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended June 19.

Given the scarcity of major new disc releases the past few weeks, the monster showdown, which earned $100.1 million at the domestic box office, sold nearly 10 times as many copies as its nearest competitor.

The Godzilla/Kong dominance was actually more pronounced considering a three-movie collection grouping Godzilla vs. Kong with franchise predecessors Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island debuted at No. 4 on the overall disc chart and No. 5 on the Blu-ray chart. About 54% of the 3-pack’s sales came from an exclusive DVD edition available at Walmart.

The disc champ the previous four weeks, Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon, slipped to No. 2 on the overall disc chart and No. 3 on the Blu-ray chart.

No. 3 overall and No. 2 on the Blu-ray chart was a release from earlier in the year making a surge, Warner’s Wonder Woman 1984.

The No. 5 overall disc seller (No. 7 on the Blu-ray chart) was Warner’s live-action/animation hybrid family comedy Tom & Jerry.

The No. 4 Blu-ray seller was Paramount’s 4K-led Indiana Jones 4-Movie Collection, which slid to No. 9 on the overall disc sales chart.

The only other newcomer in the top 20 for the week was Lionsgate’s sci-fi drama Voyagers, which debuted at No. 7 overall and No. 8 on the Blu-ray chart.

The Media Play News rental chart for the week ended June 20 had Godzilla vs. Kong at No. 1, pushing Lionsgate’s City of Lies to No. 2.

The Redbox-exclusive Rogue Hostage rose a spot to No. 3, followed at No. 4 by Voyagers. Tom & Jerry dropped three spots to No. 5.
