‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Maintains Lead on Redbox Charts
February 16, 2022
Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Afterlife spent a second week atop both the Redbox disc rental chart and the Redbox On Demand chart the week ended Feb. 13.
The franchise relaunch from director Jason Reitman is a sequel to the 1980s “Ghostbusters” films and tells the story of a family moving to Oklahoma and uncovering their connection to one of the original Ghostbusters.
Another Sony title, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, debuted at No. 2 on both the disc rental chart, which tracks DVD and Blu-ray Disc rentals at Redbox’s more than 40,000 red kiosks, and the Redbox On Demand chart, which tracks digital VOD and sellthrough transactions. The seventh “Resident Evil” film is a reboot of the film series based on the popular video game franchise of the same name. It earned $17 million at the domestic box office.
The No. 3 disc rental was another newcomer, Warner’s King Richard, a docudrama starring Will Smith as Richard Williams, father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. It earned $14.9 million at the domestic box office and scored six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Smith.
Paramount’s Clifford the Big Red Dog slipped to No. 4 on the disc rental chart on the digital chart and No. 6 on the Redbox On Demand chart.
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s new adaptation of Dune slipped to No. 5 on the disc rental chart but stayed No. 4 on the digital chart.
