French SVOD Use Increases in the New Year

Global adoption of subscription streaming video has been slow in France – until now.

New data from NPA Conseil and Harris Interactive suggest French consumers are coming around to streaming – with SVOD use up 25% in the first weeks of 2018 and spearheaded by Netflix.

Top streamed programs included season four of “Black Mirror,” the sixth season of “Arrow,” and the fourth season of “Peaky Blinders.”

In an online survey of 38,000 respondents through Jan. 14, NPA and Harris found on average there are 2.7 million SVOD users per day – up 400,000 from a similar survey conducted last September.

Respondents said they stream 1.7 programs daily, which equates to 4.7 million total programs streamed by French SVOD users per day – up 25% from the last survey.

Meanwhile, pay-TV accounts for 50% of total French home entertainment, including 20 million programs watched on-demand daily.

Notably, moviegoers represent 29% of entertainment spending, with children’s programing accounting for 12%.
