‘Free Guy’ Tops October Disc Sales Chart

Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ Free Guy was No. 1 on the top 10 list of combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales for October 2021 according to the NPD Group’s VideoScan tracking service.

The Shawn Levy-directed film stars Ryan Reynolds as a bank teller who learns he’s a video game character and yearns to become more than his programming. It was released on disc Oct. 12 and earned $121.5 million at the domestic box office.

The top September seller, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s F9: The Fast Saga, slipped to No. 2 in October.

Disney’s 1993 spooky family comedy Hocus Pocus climbed to No. 3 in October, as it typically enjoys strong sales in the lead up to Halloween. It had been No. 8 in September.

Warner’s The Suicide Squad, the James Gunn-directed sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad about a team of supervillains extorting into conducting covert operations for the U.S. government, debuted on the monthly charts at No. 4, despite having just one week of availability in October after being released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD Oct. 26.

No. 5 was another newcomer, Warner’s Space Jam: A New Legacy. The LeBron James-focused remake of 1996’s Space Jam was released on disc Oct. 5.

Disney-owned Marvel Studios’ Black Widow was No. 6 in October, down four spots from its September debut position.

A trio of Oct. 19 disc releases also landed in the October top 10. No. 7 was Paramount’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, the third live-action film based on Hasbro’s “G.I. Joe” action figures. No. 9 was Universal’s M. Night Shyamalan thriller Old. And No. 10 was Warner’s direct-to-video animated superhero movie Injustice.

No. 8 was Disney’s 1993 animated movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, which like Hocus Pocus is a strong Halloween-season catalog performer.

On the year-to-date chart, the top 10 titles remained the same, though their ordered changed a bit. Universal’s The Croods: A New Age remained the year’s top-selling title, followed by Warner’s Wonder Woman 1984 and Godzilla vs. Kong at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

The continued solid performance of F9 moved it up a spot to No. 4 for the year, dropping Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon to No. 5.

Warner’s sold well enough in October Beetlejuice to push it up to No. 8 for the year, dropping Sony Pictures’ Monster Hunter to No. 9 and Universal’s News of the World to No. 10.
