Netflix’s original French series “Lupin” is projected to reach 70 million global subscriber homes in the four weeks since its Jan. 8 debut on the streamer — topping “Bridgerton” and “The Queen’s Gambit.” It marks the first time a French series has cracked Netflix’s Top 10 in the United States. Netflix counts a viewer after two minutes of streaming a program.
The five-episode Part 1 season arc features 2012 César-winning Omar Sy (The Intouchables) playing Assane Diop, a modern-day take on the misadventures of famed gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, a character with a heart of gold created by Maurice Leblanc in 1905. Sy is the first black actor to win a French Best Actor award. Netflix plans to bow a five-episode Part 2 season later this year.
