‘Framing Agnes’ Doc on Pioneering Trans Woman Hits DVD, Digital Retailers Feb. 14

Kino Lorber on Feb. 14 will release Framing Agnes, a 2022 documentary by Canadian filmmaker Chase Joynt on a pioneering transgender woman, on DVD and through digital retailers such as Vudu and Redbox On Demand.

The film will be available early (Jan. 31) on Kino Now to buy or rent digitally.

The pseudonymous Agnes was a pioneering transgender woman who participated in an infamous gender health study conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the 1960s. Her clever use of the study to gain access to gender-affirming healthcare led to her status as a fascinating and celebrated figure in trans history.

In this innovative cinematic exercise that blends fiction and nonfiction, director Joynt uses Agnes’s story, along with others unearthed in long-shelved case files, to widen the frame through which trans history is viewed. Through a collaborative practice of reimagination, an all-star cast of trans performers, artists, and thinkers — including Angelica Ross, Jen Richards and Zackary Drucker — take on vividly rendered vintage reenactments, bringing to life groundbreaking artifacts of trans history.

Each DVD and digital edition of Framing Agnes includes a 19-minute short film by Joynt and Kristen Schilt that was the basis for the feature.
