Warner Bros.’ Elvis debuted atop the chart of the 10 most popular films on Fandango’s transactional digital service Vudu the week ended Aug. 14.
Director Baz Luhrmann’s biopic arrived for premium digital rental and purchase Aug. 9. The film, which stars Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, tells the story of Elvis Presley (Butler) through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks).
Falling from the top spot to No. 2 on the chart was Universal Pictures’ Minions: The Rise of Gru, the latest installment in the Illumination animated series. The film, which tells the story of 12-year-old Gru’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain, is available for premium digital purchase and rental.
Falling from No. 2 to No. 3 on the chart was Universal’s Jurassic World Dominion. Available for premium digital rental and purchase, the movie co-stars franchise regulars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, along with cast members Laura Dern, Sam Neil and Jeff Goldblum from the original series. It’s the third in the “Jurassic World” franchise and the sixth in the overall “Jurassic” franchise. In the film, set four years after the destruction of Isla Nubar, dinosaurs roam the Earth again.
Dropping from No. 3 to No. 4 on the chart was Universal’s horror film The Black Phone, available for digital purchase. It follows a teenage boy who is abducted by a sadistic killer (Ethan Hawke) and discovers a phone in the basement that allows him to communicate with the killer’s previous victims.
Debuting at No. 5 on the chart was My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission, newly available for digital purchase. In the anime film, when a sinister organization threatens to wipe out all superhuman powers, the fate of the world is on the line.
With the Aug. 8 death of Olivia Newton-John, her 1978 musical hit Grease landed at No. 7 on the chart, with another film starring the late singer, 1980’s Xanadu, appearing at No. 19.
