It’s rare for a direct-to-video movie to top the weekly home video sales charts, but Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s The Death of Superman pulled it off the week ended Aug. 11.
The debut of the animated superhero actioner pushed Warner’s Ready Player One, which had been the top title the previous two weeks, to No. 2 on both the NPD VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
It was a close result, as Ready Player One ended the week selling 99.9% as many total units as Death of Superman, an adaptation of the classic comic book storyline from the 1990s. The gap was a bit bigger on the Blu-ray chart, where Ready Player One sold 82% as many high-def copies.
Blu-ray Disc accounted for 78% of Death of Superman unit sales.
Warner actually had the top three titles on both charts, with the comedy Life of the Party, starring Melissa McCarthy, debuting at No. 3 after a domestic box office haul of $52.9 million.
The Universal Pictures thriller Breaking In, which stars Gabrielle Union as a mother protecting her family from burglars, debuted at No. 4 overall and No. 5 on the Blu-ray chart. The film earned $46.5 million in U.S. theaters.
No. 5 overall and No. 4 on the Blu-ray chart was Warner’s Rampage.
On the Media Play News rental chart for the week ended Aug. 12, Life of the Party debuted at No. 1, followed by Breaking In at No. 2.
Liongate’s Overboard remake dropped to No. 3 after leading all rentals the previous week.
Rounding out the top five rentals were Rampage at No. 4 and Ready Player One at No. 5.
