‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Tops February Disc Sales
March 14, 2023
Black History Month was dominated by two “Black” superhero movies.
Disney-owned Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was No. 1 on the top 10 list of physical-media sales for February 2023, according to Circana’s VideoScan tracking service that compiles DVD and Blu-ray transactions. The comic book movie sequel was the top-selling title on the weekly charts the first three weeks after its Feb. 7 release on disc.
The top seller for January, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment’s Black Adam, was No. 2 for February, having been the top seller the first week of the month and within the top five each week of the month. I
Black Adam remained the No. 1 disc seller for the year to date, while Wakanda Forever took over the No. 2 position.
The month’s No. 3 seller, continuing its strong home entertainment performance, was Paramount Home Entertainment’s Top Gun: Maverick. The fighter jet sequel had been No. 2 in January after topping the charts for both November and December. It also slipped a spot to No. 3 on the year-to-date chart.
February’s No. 4 seller was Universal Pictures’ Violent Night, the Die Hard– and Home Alone-inspired Christmas actioner in which Santa Claus has to fight off a team of armed robbers from a mansion. It had been No. 6 in January having arrived on disc Jan. 24.
The No. 5 seller for the month was Universal Pictures’ Oscar-nominated The Fabelmans, director Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical story of a teenage filmmaker and his troubled family. It arrived on disc Feb. 14 but didn’t crack the yearly top 10.
