Best Buy April 28 announced it would begin allowing consumers in select stores in May with an appointment. The nation’s largest consumer electronics retailer will start in-person consults in 200 of its 1,000 stores.
Customers can schedule appointments by phone, online, through the Best Buy app or via live chat. Customers will get confirmation of their visit, along with reminders via text and email. An employee will call the customer before their visit to go over the process, explain safety measures and get more information about their shopping needs.
In the meantime, Best Buy will continue with its e-commerce activities and curbside delivery at all store locations. Earlier this month, Best Buy furloughed about 51,000 workers, including part-time staff as it suspended normal store hours to deal with fears about spreading the coronavirus.
In an email, CEO Corie Barry said Best Buy would implement new staff procedures, including mandating all employees wear gloves and masks provided by the company. Workers will be required to do a health check before each shift with an app developed by the company.
In-store signage will encourage social distancing. Sneeze guards will be placed near the front registers, along with hand sanitizer and wipes. All surfaces will be cleaned before and after each appointment.
Barry said Best Buy has been able to retain about 70% of retail sales during the pandemic.
