‘Barbie’ Grabs No. 1 Spot on Redbox Disc Rental Chart; ‘Retirement Plan’ Tops Digital Titles

Warner’s Barbie debuted at No. 1 on the Redbox disc rental chart the week ended Oct. 22.

The blockbuster comedy based on the iconic doll brand was the top box office title of the year with $635.7 million domestically.

The No. 2 title on the disc rental chart, which tracks DVD and Blu-ray Disc rentals at Redbox’s thousands of red kiosks, was another newcomer, Universal Pictures’ The Last Voyage of the Demeter. The film is based on the chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel in which the vampire travels via a ship from Transylvania to London. It earned $13.6 million from U.S. theaters.

The previous week’s top disc rental, Universal’s Strays, slid to No. 3. The raunchy comedy follows a pack of foul-mouthed dogs as one of them seeks to return home to avenge his owner abandoning him.

Universal’s Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, dropped to No. 4 on the Redbox disc rental chart. The DreamWorks Animation film remained No. 3 on the Redbox On Demand chart, which tracks digital VOD and sellthrough transactions.

Another newcomer took the No. 5 spot on the disc rental chart, Universal’s The Hill, a baseball drama starring Dennis Quaid.

Remaining No. 2 on the digital chart was Asylum’s The Exorcists, a horror film about three experts hired by a father to purge his possessed son who learn the demon is merely the gatekeeper to a true evil that will be unleashed if they fail.

The No. 4 digital title was Universal’s extended cut of Halloween Kills.

No. 5 on the digital chart was Vertical’s The Good Mother, a thriller about a journalist (Hilary Swank) who, after the murder of her estranged son, forms an unlikely alliance with his pregnant girlfriend to track down the killers.
