‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Debuts at No. 3 on Redbox Kiosk Chart

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Debuts at No. 3 on Redbox Kiosk Chart

Redbox and The Walt Disney Co. may be feuding, but that hasn’t stopped fans of Avengers: Infinity War from renting the superhero action blockbuster at The Box.

The year’s No. 2 movie, with a domestic box office gross of more than $678 million, debuted at No. 3 on Redbox’s weekly kiosk chart for the week ended Aug. 20.

The kiosk chart tracks DVD and Blu-ray Disc rentals.

Films with high purchase appeal, like Avengers, typically don’t see much rental demand, which explains why Melissa McCarthy comedy Life of the Party, from Warner Bros., remains No. 1 on the kiosk chart for the second consecutive week – even though its box office take was less than $53 million.

Life of the Party also repeated at No. 1 on the Redbox On Demand chart, which tracks digital purchases (EST) and rentals (TVOD).

Disney and Redbox are embroiled in litigation over Redbox’s sale of digital copy codes; the studio is the only one that won’t sell DVDs or Blu-ray Discs directly to Redbox, forcing the company to buy copies at retail.

Avengers: Infinity War is not available on the Redbox On Demand site.

Also repeating, at No. 2, is Universal Pictures’ Breaking In. The revenge thriller, about a mother (Gabrielle Union) who must protect her children after the mansion of her recently deceased father is invaded by a quartet of burglars, earned $46.5 million in U.S. theaters.

Both films were released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on Aug. 7 and digital two weeks earlier (on July 24).

Lionsgate’s Overboard remake finished the week at No. 4 on the Redbox disc rental chart, down from No. 3 the prior week, while the No. 5 spot on the kiosk chart went to Warner’s Rampage, down from No. 4 the previous week.

On the Redbox digital chart, Overboard, Rampage and Ready Player One made encore appearances at Nos. 3, 4 and 5.

Paramount’s Downsizing, released back in March, returned to the Redbox On Demand chart at No. 9.
