‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Tops $1 Billion Global Box Office After 14 Days

The 20th Century Studios sci-fi fantasy drama Avatar: The Way of Water has topped $1 billion at the global box just 14 days after its Dec. 15 (sneak peak) release. Director James Cameron’s sequel to the 2009 original Avatar becomes just the sixth movie in history to reach the 10-digit fiscal threshold after two weeks of theatrical release. It also reached the benchmark five days ahead of Avatar, which remains the No. 1 all-time box office champ with $2.92 billion in revenue.

Theatrical releases that reached $1 billion in ticket sales faster than The Way of Water, include Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame with $1.22 billion in five days; Avengers: Infinity War ($1.02 billion) after 11 days; Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($1.09 billion) after 12 days; Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.05 billion) after 12 days, and Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World ($1 billion) after 13 days.

Specifically, The Way of Water has sold $1.03 billion worth of tickets, including $317.4 million across North American screens and $712.7 million internationally, according to Box Office Mojo. The movie has generated $108 million in Chinese theatrical revenue despite ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in the Middle Kingdom.
