‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Moves Past ‘Titanic’ to No. 3 on All-Time Box Office List

Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ sequel Avatar: The Way of Water continues to break records, supplanting 1997’s Titanic as the No. 3 all-time grossing theatrical release globally with $2.243 billion in revenue through Feb. 19. Both movies, along with the No. 1 release of all time, 2009’s Avatar, are directed by James Cameron.

The sequel, which has generated four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, has sold $658.4 million worth of tickets in North America, which trails Europe with a projected $759 million, but tops Asia-Pacific at about $646 million. China has tallied almost $244 million in revenue, followed by Latin America at $181 million.

In short, the sequel’s fiscal largess has been largely been driven by international ticket sales totaling $1.586 billion. Indeed, The Way of Water actually still trails Titanic at the North American box office, the latter sitting at more than $672 million.

Paramount Pictures generated almost $2.3 million in incremental box office revenue through the Feb. 19 weekend following a 25th Anniversary Titanic re-release. The movie has generated more than $12 million since being re-released in theaters on Feb. 10.
