‘Avatar 2’ Passes ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ for No. 4 All-Time Box Office Gross

Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ pricey Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, again topped the weekend box office, generating $15.7 million in projected North American ticket sales in its seventh weekend of release through Jan. 29.

The film’s worldwide tally was enough to push Way of Water past Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.07 billion) as the No. 4 all-time grossing theatrical release globally with $2.11 billion in revenue. The James Cameron-directed feature now sits behind his 1997 romantic thriller Titanic ($2.19 billion), Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion) and 2009’s Avatar ($2.92 billion) in all-time global ticket sales.

Separately, Universal Pictures/DreamWorks’ sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish added another $10.6 million in revenue to up its total to $334 million globally ($140.8 million North American) after six week of release. The result is a relative strong showing since it is also available on PVOD for $19.99 rental and $24.99 purchase.

Sony Pictures’ Tom Hanks-starrer A Man Called Otto sold another $6.75 million worth of tickets in its third weekend, upping its global total to about $68 million, $46 million domestically.

The movie edged out Yash Raj Films’ Hindi-language actioner Pathaan at $6.7 million and  Universal/Blumhouse’s M3GAN at $6.3 million in new ticket sales, respectively. The sci-fi horror film M3GAN, which is also available on PVOD, passed $82 million domestically after three weekends.

Neon’s new horror release Infinity Pool, co-starring Mia Goth (X), saw $2.7 million in revenue across more than 1,800 screens.
