‘Avatar 2’ Passes ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ to Become No. 5 All-Time Box Office Movie

Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ big-budget sequel Avatar: The Way of Water has passed Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War to become the fifth-highest grossing movie of all time with $2.054 in ticket sales through Jan. 26.

The follow-up to director James Cameron’s 2009 Avatar — the all-time top-grossing movie with more than $2.92 billion in revenue — surpassed 2018’s Infinity War with $2.052 billion. The Way of Water now sits $14 million behind No. 4, Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $2.068 billion.

Cameron has now directed three of the top-five-grossing movies of all time, when including 1997’s Titanic, No. 3 with $2.19 billion in ticket sales. The No. 2 all-time grossing movie remains Marvel’s 2019 Avengers: Endgame at $2.799 billion.
