Merchandising: ‘Shang-Chi’ Exclusives Arrive at Retail

Nov. 30 saw two of the big retail chains offer exclusive 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray editions for Disney-owned Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The film, the 25th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stars Simu Liu as the title hero who must come to terms with his family’s complicated history and confront his father, the legendary warlord who heads the Ten Rings organization.

Best Buy offered the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with Steelbook packaging for $34.99.

Target offered the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc combo pack of the film with special packaging, box art and two limited-edition foil-edged prints for $34.99.

Separately, Target offered up to 40% off select holiday music and movies.

Best Buy to Sell Exclusive ‘Requiem for a Dream’ 4K Steelbook

Best Buy Jan. 18 will sell an exclusive Steelbook edition of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray of Lionsgate’s Requiem for a Dream.

The psychological drama from director Darren Aronofsky was originally released in 2000 and features cinematography by two-time Academy Award nominee Matthew Libatique and music by Golden Globe nominee Clint Mansell.

With a screenplay by Aronofsky and Hubert Selby Jr., based on Selby’s nove, Requiem for a Dream stars Oscar winners Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly and Ellen Burstyn, along with Marlon Wayans, in a hypnotic film about four people pursuing their visions of happiness. Even as everything begins to fall apart, they refuse to let go, plummeting with their dreams into a nightmarish, gut-wrenching freefall.

The Steelbook features new artwork from Vance Kelly and carries a list price of $27.99.

Previously released extras include the featurettes “On Set: 1999,” “Transcendent Moments: The Score of Requiem for a Dream,” “Ellen Burstyn on Requiem for a Dream” and “Through Their Eyes: Revisiting Requiem for a Dream.”

‘Red Notice,’ ‘Hawkeye’ Top Weekly Whip Media Streaming Charts

Netflix’s Red Notice again led the Whip Media chart of top streaming movies, while the Disney+ series “Hawkeye” led the chart of top streaming originals among U.S. consumers the week ended Nov. 28.

Red Notice is an action adventure starring Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot. It started streaming on Netflix Nov. 12.

The Marvel Universe-based series “Hawkeye” debuted on Disney+ Nov. 24. It follows the exploits of the title Marvel character played by Jeremy Renner as he works with a young avenger (Hailee Steinfeld) who wants to take over his role.

TV Time, a Whip Media company, is a free TV and movie viewership tracking app with 18 million global users. Repeating at No. 2 on the streaming movies chart was Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which became available for digital viewing at no additional cost to Disney+ subscribers Nov. 12. The 25th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe stars Simu Liu in the title role, a hero who must face the past he thought he left behind and confront his father Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung), leader of the dangerous Ten Rings organization. Awkwafina also stars.

Taking the bronze on the streaming movies chart was Jungle Cruise, also streaming on Disney+. Based on the classic Disneyland ride, the film stars Dwayne Johnson as Frank, the skipper of an Amazon River tour boat, who is recruited by explorer Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt), who seeks an ancient tree with mythical healing abilities.

Landing at No. 2 on the streaming originals chart was Prime Video’s “The Wheel of Time,” which debuted Nov. 19. It’s a fantasy series based on a book series of the same name.

Coming in at No. 3 on the streaming originals chart was Hulu’s “The Great,” season two of which debuted Nov. 19. It loosely follows the life of Russia’s Catherine the Great.

Fire TV Sticks Lead Record Amazon Black Friday, Cyber Weekend Sales

Amazon Nov. 30 announced that its branded Fire TV Stick streaming media device, along with third-party branded Fire TV devices, helped drive record online sales on Black Friday (Nov. 26) through the Cyber Monday (Nov. 29).

The e-commerce behemoth did not disclose actual revenue data, but did share that smart-TVs from Insignia, Toshiba and Pioneer using Fire TV, as well as all-new standalone Amazon Fire TV Omni and 4-Series HDTVs debuted No. 1 in sales on the website thus far in the holiday retail season.

Analytics company Profitero said Amazon topped Best Buy, Target and Walmart, among 12 online retailers, for lowest prices across 15,530 products and 15 categories.

Among top-selling video game discs: Mojang’s Minecraft for Sony PlayStation 4, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s Bakugan Champions Vestroia for the Nintendo Switch console.

Amazon is extending through Dec. 5 price discounts on all Fire TV devices, including $12 off the Fire TV Stick Lite; $20 off the Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen.); $25 off the Fire TV Stick with 4K; $20 off the Fire TV Stick 4K Max; $40 off the Fire TV Cube; and $100 off the Fire TV Recast.

New Original Mystery Series ‘The Tower’ Headed to Britbox Dec. 1

Gemma Whelan (“Game of Thrones,” “Killing Eve”) is headlining a new original drama on the British streaming service Britbox called “The Tower.” All episodes premiere Dec. 1.

The series — based on the novel by Kate London, a former U.K. detective who spent eight years on the force — is written and executive produced by Patrick Harbison of “Homeland” and “24.”

In “The Tower,” Whelan plays a detective brought in to investigate a shocking event in London’s East End in which a veteran cop and teenage girl are killed and a rookie cop and 5-year-old boy go missing. Seemingly their only connection is the tower where the incident took place.

The series co-stars Jimmy Akingbola (“Kate & Koji,” upcoming “Bel-Air”), Emmett J Scanlan (“Peaky Blinders,” “Gangs of London”) and Tahirah Sharif (“Casualty,” “The Haunting of Bly Manor”).

Study: Roku No. 1 TV Streaming Platform in Mexico

Roku announced that it is the No. 1 TV streaming platform in Mexico, based on hours streamed, according to a recent study conducted by the Hypothesis Group.

The study was conducted by the Hypothesis Group among 2,534 survey respondents in October 2021. In addition, the study also found that consumers in Mexico view Roku as the best streaming platform for free TV shows and movies, according to Roku.

This leadership position comes as the company closes 2021 with eight Roku TV partners in Mexico and the arrival of the new Roku Streaming Stick 4K player.

Fellini Classic ‘La Dolce Vita’ Headed to Blu-ray With New Intro by Martin Scorsese

Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini’s 1960 classic La Dolce Vita will be released on Blu-ray Feb. 8 by Paramount Home Entertainment with a new introduction by director Martin Scorsese, who shares his thoughts on the film and its impact on cinema.

Both a critique of the culture of stardom and a look at the darkness beneath the seductive lifestyles of Rome’s rich, La Dolce Vita follows a notorious celebrity journalist over one crazy week. It stars Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimée and Yvonne Furneaux.

The film was restored in 2011 by Cineteca di Bologna at L’Immagine Ritrovata Laboratory in association with The Film Foundation, Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia-Cineteca Nazionale, Pathé, Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, Mediaset-Medusa, Paramount Pictures and Cinecittà Luce.

Amazon Prime Video Hires Kelly Day to Run International Operations

Amazon has reportedly lured longtime digital executive Kelly Day away from ViacomCBS International to the newly created position of VP of Prime Video International. Day begins her new position in January, reporting to Mike Hopkins, SVP of Prime Video and Amazon Studios.

Formerly president of Viacom Digital Studios, Day is credited with upgrading the media giant’s digital content and distribution. Under her leadership, VDS created and distributed thousands of hours of premium digital content across Viacom’s global entertainment brands including MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central.

During her ViacomCBS tenure, Day spearheaded the acquisitions of both Awesomeness TV and VidCon, an annual festival and conference for online video expanded to Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Mexico and London.

Samba TV: Netflix’s ‘Bruised’ Topped Weekend (Nov. 28) Streaming

The Netflix original movie Bruised led all streaming content through Nov. 28 — including the premiere episode of “Hawkeye” on Disney+ — according to new data from Samba TV, which tracks more than 46 million opted-in televisions globally, including 28 million in the United States.

In the film directed by Oscar-winner Halle Berry, a disgraced MMA fighter finds redemption in the cage and the courage to face her demons when the son she had given up as an infant unexpectedly reenters her life.

The movie tracked 1.7 million U.S. households in its first five days of release (Nov. 23 – 28). The U.S. audience skewed female (+11%), younger (44 and below), black (+88%) and Hispanic (+29%). Of the top 25 largest designated market areas, Raleigh, N.C., over-indexed the most (+33%), followed by Atlanta (+28%) and Chicago (+26%).
About 1.5 million U.S. households streamed the first episode of “Hawkeye,” the fifth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe produced by Marvel Studio, and starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld. Another 1.3 million U.S. homes streamed the second episode.
The U.S. audience of the first episode skewed slightly female (+4%) and slightly white (+1%). Of the top 25 largest DMAs, Portland, Ore., over-indexed the most (+34%), followed by Seattle (+31%) and Philadelphia (+21%).
Other top-streaming shows included Netflix’s A Castle for Christmas, which generated 743,000 U.S. homes during its first three days of release. Of the top 25 largest DMAs, Portland over-indexed the most (+42%), followed by Sacramento, Calif., (+33%) and Tampa (+28%).
Finally, 580,000 U.S. households streamed “Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses.” The audience skewed slightly female (+2%) and white (+12%). Of the top 25 largest DMAs, Pittsburgh over-indexed the most (+75%), followed by Orlando (+63%) and St. Louis (+47%).

LG Creating Physical and Virtual Experience at CES

CES exhibitor LG Electronics will create a physical and virtual experience at its booth during CES 2022, taking place Jan. 5-8.

At its traditional location — the 22,000-square-foot booth at the main entrance to the Central Hall in the Las Vegas Convention Center — LG will connect visitors from the physical space to LG’s virtual experience leveraging both virtual and augmented reality. Constructed of upcycled, recycled and recyclable materials, the space will feature a series of kiosks where visitors can experience LG products.

Visitors will take a self-guided tour using QR codes as they navigate through the physical experience, interacting with LG consumer electronics and home appliance products via AR. Other kiosks will feature immersive VR digital art, including LG’s immersive curved OLED video walls.

Audiences around the world will be able to access the same content and participate digitally in the LG CES experience.

LG has again been named official CES technology partner for the press rooms and member lounges, which will feature LG OLED TVs.
